1. If you bet $5 on a horse race and your horse wins 50 to 1, how much money would you win?
    You win $250.

2. Note the reference to paul eyes. how do they reflect his mental state?
   It reflects his mental state, because it shows that he is crazy and anxious.

3. What can the reader infer anout the mother in the story based on the descriptions of her background, marriage, and relationship to her children?
She married for love and the love turned into dust. she had little income and wasn't very lucky because if she were lucky she would have had money.  She doesn't show love for her children.

4. What is the setting of the story?
   A rich country house in England.

5. Identify a simile that is used to describe basset.
   A simile they use to describe Bassett, is Basset was serious as a church, so they compare him to a church.

6. Why does Paul's gaze make uncle Oscar uneasy?
  Paul gaze makes Uncle Oscar feel uneasy because the look of Paul's eyes is unnatural and it makes Uncle Oscar feel as if something bad is going to happen.

7. Compare Paul's behavior at the racetrack with that of the Frenchman.
 The are both wild and crazy when it comes to gambling on the horses.
8. What do Paul's eyes turning to stone and his mother's heart turning to stone symbolize?
  It symbolizes Paul's death.

9. How would describe Paul's relationship with his mother?
 Relationship with his mother isn't  perfect, instead its one-sided. Paul consumes all his time and energy in finding luck. After his mother tells him ,"If you are lucky you have money." Throughout the story Paul desperately seeks attention and approval from his mother.

10. Why is this ironic-- ''if you are lucky, you have money'' in the light of how the story ended?
  Its ironic because in the end, Paul's family ends up having money therefore becoming lucky, yet Paul dies.
